As so often is discovered, the most effective prevention and healing processes are those given to us at birth. When not available in sufficient quantity by natural means, then therapy and supplements that closely duplicate nature help our bodies to fight diseases.

Naturopathic medicine is rooted in that belief. Dr. Gez Agolli, ND PhD (Naturopathic Doctor) at Progressive Medical Center (PMC) is especially excited about the research being reported about the tiny molecule known as glutathione (pronounced gloo-ta-thigh’-own).

What is Glutathione?

“Glutathione (GSH) is a powerful substance. GSH levels are one of the very few factors that are a predictive marker of how long a cell will live and thrive. In other words, our life expectancy,” Agolli explained. “Glutathione is called the ‘master antioxidant,’ which regulates the actions of lesser antioxidants such as Vitamin E and C. Without it all other antioxidants cannot properly do their job.”

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods that can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products), which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as scavengers to prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.

Dr. Gustavo Bounous, MD, director of research and development at Immunotec and a retired professor of surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada said, “Glutathione is a very interesting, very small molecule that’s produced by the body. It’s the body’s most important antioxidant because it’s within the cell.”

Over the past five years, over 25,000 medical articles on GSH have been published, emphasizing the importance and attention being given to this substance. For example, in his article entitled, “What you should know about the Super Antioxidant Miracle,” Dr. Earl Mindel, wrote, “We literally cannot survive without this antioxidant.”

Toxicity- A Root Cause of Disease

Dr. Agolli adds, “Many treatments for disease benefit from GSH because toxicity is a major root cause. Glutathione helps rid the body of excess toxicity. Much research has gone into treating neurological diseases such multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), and Parkinson’s.”

Named as one of the world’s most outstanding scientists of the 21st century, Robert Keller MD, MS, FACP, is a leading proponent of glutathione. He said, “Without it, your cells would disintegrate from unrestrained oxidation, your body would have little resistance to metabolic acids, and your liver would shrivel up from the eventual accumulation of acidic toxins.”

Depletion of Glutathione

What can cause the depletion of this naturally produced substance?
a) Acidic lifestyle and diet
b) Air and Water pollution
c) Prescription and recreational drugs
d) Ultraviolet and radiation from cellphones, computers, electrical cars, power lines, hair dryers, etc.
e) Emotional and physical stress
f) Injury, trauma, or burns
g) Heavy metals
h) Cigarette smoke
i) Household chemicals
j) Acetaminophen poisoning
k) Exhaust from motor vehicles
l) Septic shock

All of these above factors lead to a build up of acidic toxins that cause the loss of glutathione as a non-nutritive buffer leading to cellular aging, disease, and finally death. GSH binds to toxins, forming a water-soluble complex, which is ultimately excreted in the urine or bile as waste.

There are eight major health issues of the modern world: cardiovascular, cancer, pulmonary, aging, digestive, toxicology, immunology, metabolic. Amazingly, this tiny main antioxidant called glutathione has a connection that cannot be overstated.

Free Radicals and the Brain

Disorders of the brain and nervous system linked to oxidative stress range from brain injury (trauma, stroke, ischemia) to neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, MS, ALS), and to others (schizophrenia, Down syndrome, Huntington’s, and sleep deprivation).

“Many neurological and psychiatric disease processes are characterized by high levels of oxidative stress and free radical formation, as well as abnormalities in glutathione metabolism and antioxidant defenses,” writes Gutman, M.D. in Glutathione.

“The brain is particularly susceptible to free radical attack because it generates more oxidative byproducts per gram of tissue than any other organ. Since that organ’s characterized by high levels of oxidative stress and free radical formation, as well as abnormalities in glut
athione metabolism and antioxidant defenses.”

Do You Need Testing?

Dr. Agolli recommends contacting Progressive at (770) 676-6000 concerning these or similar conditions to arrange for testing. “My main goal is to peak the interest of the reader to check their glutathione levels. At Progressive Medical Center, we get to know our patients and establish their treatment accordingly.

If the administering of glutathione is indicated, we may also prescribe dietary and exercise, infrared sauna, lifestyle modification, stress reduction, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and individualized supplements.”
