PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma has hit the mainstream as a non-surgical treatment for Hair Regrowth.
Why are platelets important?
Doctors have known for years that healing depends on platelets. These tiny blood components are rich in growth factors. When you injure a ligament or a muscle, they go to the wound. They then start to release growth factors to the area to coordinate a repair response. Over the first week or so, they act like a time-release pill, deploying various growth factors as various times to accelerate healing. These time-release growth factors do things like bring in naturally existing stem cells and encourage development of new blood vessels so the body can deliver more blood to that area.
What is PRP?
PRP is created when drawn blood is processed in a special centrifuge that results in a concentrate of platelets (3x-5x normal concentration)- thus “Platelet Rich.” PRP that is injected is a mix of concentrated platelets and serum for enhanced impact.
This PRP can be used to promote hair growth and also provide thickness to hair that has become thin.
What’s the process?
As with all Progressive Medical procedures, there is a careful process involved. After evaluation to determine if someone is a good candidate for using PRP for hair regrowth, there is a standard blood draw from the patient’s arm. The blood is then centrifuged and combined with the serum. While the centrifuge is running, the physical area to be treated has a numbing agent applied in order to dull sensitivity temporarily. The PRP mixture is then injected directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. The process is done with attention to detail, creating many small injections across the scalp so as to regrow hair thickness across the scalp.
Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Compared to Other Forms of Therapy
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem cell therapy has a number of benefits over other common treatment methods. Here’s why more people are choosing this revolutionary technology:
Quick Results that Last
Results are typically seen within two to three months.*
Simple in-office procedure
The treatment is performed as an in-office procedure. The entire procedure takes about 1-2 hours.
The procedure requires no downtime. After the treatment, the patient is free to go back home or work.
This is a minimally-invasive procedure that can treat hair loss. As a minimally invasive procedure, it fairs better than other extensive procedures such as hair transplant, hair grafting, and scalp reduction.
Safety and Side Effects
PRP therapy is considered to be generally safe. The minimally-invasive nature of the procedure reduces the possibility of side effects. It is therefore generally considered to be a much safer option than medication, such as Minoxidil and Propecia, that can cause a number of side effects.
