Far Infrared Saunas – What Can They Do for You?

we practice an integrative approach to medicine that takes into account the body, mind, and spirit.

We continually research natural prevention and healing methods to not only treat patients in our clinic but to extend into their everyday lives. Infrared sauna therapy is a popular treatment in our center because of its proven benefits such as detoxification, weight loss, and pain relief. But did you know you can benefit from infrared sauna treatments in your own home as often as you want? Infrared saunas are affordable, maintenance-free, and extremely beneficial with regular use making them one of the fastest-growing home therapies.

Detoxification, Weight-loss & More

New sauna technology can harness infrared’s full spectrum to provide the health benefits associated with each part of the spectrum (near, mid & far wavelengths). Clinical research shows that each wavelength addresses different benefits.

Near-Infrared (NIR)

The shortest wavelength, NIR, penetrates the skin’s surface stimulating collagen production and improving its appearance. Studies have shown that LED-produced NIR promotes faster cell regeneration, wound healing, and human tissue growth resulting in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and improved skin tone including elasticity and clarity.

Mid Infrared (MIR)

Mid-infrared is a longer wavelength and can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue where inflammation occurs. MIR helps to expand blood vessels and increase circulation allowing more oxygen to reach injured areas of the body resulting in reduced pain and a faster healing process.

Far Infrared (FIR)

The longest wavelength, FIR, penetrates the body the deepest at the cellular level where toxins are stored. Studies have shown that FIR raises core body temperature stimulating the sweat glands resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat. Furthermore, sweating is part of the body’s thermoregulatory process that increases the heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate causing the body to burn calories. Studies have shown that a 30-minute FIR sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories! Learn more about infrared health benefits.

What is far infrared?

Infrared light is the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum consisting of three different wavelengths – near, mid, and far – with the ability to penetrate human tissue. This characteristic makes infrared beneficial because it heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where the majority of toxins reside. Infrared heat is completely safe and healthy for all living things. It is a naturally occurring output of the sun but does not contain the harmful UV rays associated with unprotected sunlight. In fact, infrared’s gentle heat is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants.

Infrared Sauna and Women’s Breast Health (In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!) Healthy Living recently highlighted the role infrared can play in women’s health: “These multiple lines of evidence support a theory of breast cancer—at the point of intersection among women, their diet and massive pollution of the environment—that demands the attention of women who want to prevent this disease.” Read the entire article.

To get the maximum benefits received with regular use, we recommend adding a full spectrum infrared sauna to your home. Most saunas available on the market only offer far-infrared heat.
