Man with mental health issues that were increased by quarantine

Mental Health in the Midst of Quarantine

COVID-19 has affected the way we interact and how we deal with global conflict. It has provided insight into how technology can affect the way we socialize, communicate with health care providers, and engage in community events. Not only is COVID-19 adversely affecting our physical health, but it has also taken a detrimental toll on mental health as well.

If you’ve noticed changes in mood that are very different from before, this could be an early indicator that something isn’t right. If your peers and family are noticing that you are becoming more and more irritated over the smallest things, this could be a sign of something more.

However, being irritable can be normal – sometimes when there is a lot of stress in our lives, we tend to take it out on others. However, it’s up to you and a mental health professional to determine the origin of your mood changes.

Here are some signs that quarantine may be affecting your mental health:

  • Irritability
  • Increased anxiety
  • Constant feelings of sadness
  • Pessimism
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Increased substance abuse
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Change in eating patterns

Studies on the impact of COVID-19 have identified unpredictability, misinformation, social isolation, and uncertainty as to the leading causes of stress and poor mental health.1 But what can you do?

  • Take break a break from the news and social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can increase your anxiety and worry, it’s better to just turn your devices off.
  • Stay healthy and active
  • Eat well-balanced meals
  • Sleep: Sleep is not only beneficial to your physical health but your mental health as well.
  • Avoid abusive substances, like alcohol and drugs.
  • Unwind: Make more time for relaxing hobbies.
  • Keep a healthy social life. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling– odds are they are feeling somewhat the same.
