The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of your neck that releases hormones that control metabolism—the way your body uses energy. The thyroid’s hormones regulate vital body functions, including breathing, heart rate, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels and more. The thyroid gland and its hormones affect almost every organ system of your body.

When your thyroid isn’t working properly, it can cause symptoms such as weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair loss, constipation or diarrhea, depression or anxiety, dry skin and more.

It’s important to keep your thyroid healthy by eating a balanced diet with iodine-rich foods such as seaweed, fish and dairy products.
