Integrative medicine is a comprehensive, science-based approach to medical care that draws on the best of many different specialties: natural (or functional) medicine, allopathic (or conventional) medicine, advanced diagnostic testing, nutrition, metabolism, detoxification, nutritional supplements, customized diets, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage, among others. In Integrative medicine, natural medical therapies are preferred as a way to mimic and enhance the body’s natural, healing abilities while minimizing unwanted side effects.
The focus is to address the underlying causes of illness, not just the symptoms, and to promote health of the whole person- mind, body, and spirit. If you are looking for a different approach to solving many of the medical issues and symptoms that plague millions of people around the world on a daily basis, then consider Progressive Medical Center.

Integrative medicine is compatible with conventional medicine
Conventional doctors do not have proper training in nutrition and its health benefits (yes, this is very surprising). For years, we have known that the right food can be the best driver of health. You’ve heard “let thy food be thy medicine?” That’s right.
For that reason, most conventional treatment methods can be improved when including nutrition, emotional health, and other aspects of health assessed by the alternative treatment model. We at Progressive can help you add these elements of health and wellness to your life.
For instance, suppose you were going through a traditional therapy, such as chemotherapy. If all you did was chemotherapy and you did not address your nutritional, emotional, and spiritual statuses, you’d basically destroy all of the good cells as well as the cancer cells. Instead, integrative medicine support would add in natural therapies (nutritional, supplemental, emotional, spiritual, etc). This allows the body to stay stronger, recover quicker, and heal more effectively. Using both traditional and natural therapies can be powerful.
Integrative medicine is scientifically based
Integrative practices are science-based therapies which tap into the body’s natural healing abilities.
Integrative medicine is science. It is not magic, although many patients say it seems like magic after years of misdiagnoses.
We approach your health with an inquiry-driven perspective— using natural, effective, and less invasive methods whenever possible. And yes, we will write traditional prescriptions if that will be more effective for your health. You would be suprised at how often natural solutions are MORE effective than pharmaceuticals, however.
We use broader concepts to promote health and the prevention of illness, as well as the treatment of disease. We train practitioners to be the model of integrative medicine.
As a key point, we use natural methods with the purpose of facilitating the body’s innate healing responses. The key here is that integrative medicine is a philosophy that neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts natural therapies uncritically.
We neither reject conventional medicine nor we accept natural therapies uncritically. We have scientific research to back everything up.
If it’s too good to be true, why isn’t everyone else doing it?
This type of medicine might not appeal to everyone, although it is growing in popularity every year, as more people see the benefits of empowering their body’s natural healing abilities, avoiding pharmaceutical side-effects, and feeling better than they have before!
In functional integrative medicine, we believe that our standard of care is the medicine in the future, and that it will become more widely adopted as traditional medicine sees all of the benefits and health transformations of integrative medicine.
Why? Well, 20 years ago we talked about the benefits of using omega-3 fatty acids to block an inflammation mechanism. You can do the exact same thing with steroids, but steroids act as a double-edge sword—-they work great for stopping inflammation, but they shut down your entire immune system, which makes you susceptible to infections. Yet, when you use omega-3 fatty acids, you block the inflammatory aspect of the body… without negative side-effects and with many other positive benefits to the body and brain!
Physicians 20 years ago tremendously criticized this because they said there was a lack of scientific evidence. Well guess what? Nowadays, some fish oil is available by prescription, called Lovaza®. Yes, you can buy the exact same natural product in a health foods store, but now they have it available in pharmaceutical-grade.
My point is that it took 20 years with something we knew was safe back then, and now we know it’s a standard of care today.
Integrative medicine is not just for “hippies”, it is REAL MEDICINE!
Integrative medicine is real medicine.
People from all walks of life have an interest in natural, integrative, alternative medicine. People from all spectrums of life— political, religious, lifestyle, etc—embrace this type of medicine.
Quite frankly, not all diets work for everyone. For instance, carnivorous diets are good for some and vegetarian diets are good for others. It is very individualized. What works for some may not work for others.
We have to go back to the root cause here—integrative medicine is addressing all aspects of medicine. That’s what I like about getting to the root cause with the team approach.
Finally, Naturopathic doctors are 4-yr doctors
We have full MD’s on our staff. We also have Naturopathic Doctors. Naturopathic doctors have thousands of hours of training and attend a 4-year school. While the program includes similar curriculum-study of the body, its systems, and chemical exchanges- the healing training for N.D.’s is focused not on surgery (like M.D.’s), but on a distinct system of healing, a philosophy, a science, an art, and a practice, which seeks to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body’s inherent power to regain harmony and balance.
